The term ‘Black Friday’ has come under much criticism from religious quarters as various brands and stores began offering massive Black Friday discounts in keeping with retail and consumer trends in the United States.

Earlier on November last year, petition was filed in IHC to ban the discount sale festival for being ‘contrary to Islamic teachings’ on ‘Black Friday’ banner throughout Pakistan. The petitioner had made the federal government a party through secretary information, secretary religious affairs, chairman Pemra, district magistrate, chief commissioner and chairman Council of Islamic Ideology (CII).

Black Friday is held, particularly in the USA, to mark the start of Christmas discount sales season. However, the term is alien to Pakistani culture and its recent introduction has raised eyebrows.
