PM Appeals Overseas Pakistanis To Donate Funds For Dams

Islamabad (September 07, 2018): The Prime Minister Imran Khan highlighting the importance of the dams said that Pakistan only had 30 days water reservoirs capacity that was an alarming situation and required the instant construction of dams to face the water scarcity challenges.

Prime Minister Imran Khan spoke to the nation in a brief televised address on Friday evening to appeal for donations to the dams fund set up by the Supreme Court.

“There is no question we are faced with several significant problems,” the prime minister said. “The biggest problem we face is the water crisis.”

He appealed the entire nation particularly overseas Pakistani to donate in the dams funds.

“I commend Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar [for starting the dams fund]. This was not his job, but the civilian leaders who knew this was going to swell into a crisis and did nothing.”“I want to take over the fund-raising and want overseas Pakistanis to contribute like they have for the Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital.”

The prime minister asked all the overseas Pakistanis to make as many dollar-denominated donations as they can to the dams fund.

Imran Khan in a message to the nation, asked overseas Pakistanis, especially those living in European countries and the United States to contribute at least $1000 in the fund created by Chief Justice of Pakistan.The PM said “Our debt today stands at 30,000 billion. But one of our biggest issues to date is the water issue. When Pakistan was made; every Pakistani had 5600 cubic metres of water. Today that stands at only 1000 cubic metres.”

He said the prime minister and chief justice’s fund for the construction of dams would be combined.

The prime minister further urged Pakistanis in Europe and the US to contribute at least $1000.

The premier said: “No one will give us loans. We have to construct this dam. I assure you that I will protect your money.”This was PM Khan’s second address with the nation since assuming office. In his first address, the prime minister had outlined austerity measures and the need to tackle corruption to bring Pakistan on track.

The prime minister also appealed to overseas Pakistanis to invest in the country, deposit money and send remittances in Pakistani banks.

Last month, overseas Pakistanis were granted the right to vote in the upcoming by-elections.
