Contempt Case: Talal Chaudhry Gets More Time To Hire Counsel

Islamabad (February 13, 2018): The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday granted a week more to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Leader Talal Chaudhry to hire a new counsel in his contempt of court case and adjourned the hearing till Monday.

According to details, the hearing for contempt of court case against PML-N leader Talal Chaudhry was held at Supreme Court. The bench hearing the case comprised of Justice Ejaz Afzal as its head along with Justice Maqbool Baqar and Justice Faisal Arab.During the hearing, Talal Chaudhry informed the court that his lawyer Asma Jahangir has died, therefore the court should give him more time to hire another lawyer.

The court accepted his plea and gave him time to hire new counsel and adjourned the hearing for 19 February.

Earlier on February 06, the apex court rejected Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Talal Chaudhry’s appeal seeking time for three weeks to hire lawyer in contempt of court case against him.

According to the details, Minister of State for Interior Affairs Talal Chaudhry asked the Supreme Court for three weeks to finalise legal representation in the contempt of court initiated against him.

During the hearing headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal, the three-member bench asked Talal Chaudhry how much time he requires to appoint a lawyer over which, he said that he needs three weeks for this as counsels are busy.

The court issued show cause notice to PML-N leader and adjourned the hearing till next Tuesday.

Earlier, Chaudhry arrived in court along with senior party leaders, including Senator Pervaiz Rasheed and state minister Tariq Fazl Chaudhry, to appear before a three-member bench, headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and comprising Justices Maqbool Baqar and Faisal Arab.The apex court initiated contempt proceedings against Chaudhry on account of “derogatory and contemptuous speeches/statements” with regard to the honourable court, read a notification issued on February 2.

It is to be mentioned here that suo moto notice was taken after Talal denigrated Panama Case verdict on myriad occasions.

While equating judges with idols in Jaranwala rally, Talal urged PML-N president Nawaz Sharif to oust them from courts. He said there was no hope of justice till these judges were sitting in the courts.

Earlier, SC had also issued contempt of court notice to Minister of Privatisation Daniyal Aziz while proceeding against him will be launched from February 7.

The apex court had also sentenced former PML-N leader Nehal Hashmi to one month in prison over similar charges.

On May 28, Hashmi triggered a political storm by threatening the members of the joint investigation team (JIT) and Supreme Court judges of “dire consequences” after their retirement for probing Sharif family in connection with Panama Papers case.
