Contempt of Court: IHC To Resume Nawaz’s Trial Today   

Islamabad (February 26, 2018): The Islamabad High Court (IHC) will resume the hearing of contempt of court case filed against former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today.

The petition was filed by Advocate Makhdoom Niaz Inqalabi who pleaded with the court to ban the transmission of Nawaz Sharif’s speeches as he lashes out at judges in his public appearances and media talks.The petition against Nawaz Sharif has secretary information and chairman Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) as parties to the case. The judge of IHC justice Amir Farooq will hear the case.

Earlier on February 20, The Islamabad High Court on Tuesday refused to listen to the case against the former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif over his tirade against the judiciary due to a similar case pending in Lahore High Court. IHC adjourned the contempt of court case hearing till February 26 in order to wait for a verdict of Lahore High Court in a similar case.

The case proceedings headed by Justice Amir Farooq began on Tuesday to listen to a petition filed by a lawyer Makhdoom Niaz for contempt of court case against Nawaz Sharif.

The judge however inquired if a similar case was being heard in Lahore High Court. To which it was informed that a similar case is fixed for hearing at the Lahore High Court for February 23.

The court adjourned the hearing till 26 February.

The petition of contempt of court was filed by advocate Makhdoom Niaz Inqlabi and named secretary information and chairman Print and Electronic Regularity Authority (PEMRA) as respondents.Petitioner requested, in his plea, to IHC for the ban on former prime minister Nawaz Sharif live speeches on electronic media.

He also has the stance that former PM Nawaz Sharif made the habit of character assassination of judges through his contemptuous speeches.

On January 31, the Lahore High Court issued a notice to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, demanding their response on a contempt of court case petitioned by Advocate Azahar Siddiqui.LHC Issues Notice To Nawaz, Maryam on Contempt PetitionIn the petition, Advocate Siddiqui maintained that Nawaz, his daughter Maryam Nawaz has made anti-judiciary speeches in the recently held Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s Jalsa in Jaranwala, hence the court should initiate contempt of court proceedings against them.

While hearing the case, Justice Shahid Karim directed the petitioner to present of pieces of evidence of contempt in the next hearing.
