Contempt of Court: LHC Issues Notices to Nawaz, Ministers

Lahore (August 15, 2017)  Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday issued notices to former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and a number of federal ministers on a petition seeking contempt of court proceedings for their outburst against the Supreme Court during GT Road rally from Islamabad to Lahore.

Justice Mamoon-ur-Rashid of LHC heard the petition. The judge asked petitioner’s counsel Azhar Siddique to Advocate to advance arguments on maintainability of the petition.

When the court asked the petitioner’s counsel as to how the petition was maintainable. The counsel said that his client had written Pemra and Information Ministry many times but no heed was paid to her complaints.The court asked the counsel as to how such statement amounts to sedition. The counsel pleaded the court to allow him to amend his petition. Upon this, the court allowed the counsel to filed amended petition.

A law officer of Punjab raised objections over maintainability of the petition.It is to be mentioned here that Amaan Welfare Foundation President Amina Malik had filed the petition through Advocate Azhar Siddique saying Mr Sharif and his team have been committing sedition by trying to defame the institutions of judiciary and the army.

The petitioner stated that the purpose and motive behind disgracing and committing contempt is very obvious as the investigation is under process for filing of reference(s) by the NAB before the trial court. She contends that the respondents have not only committed contempt of court but defamed the judges of Supreme Court besides criticizing the institutions.
