KARACHI: An accountability court on Saturday directed to initiate proceeding to declare former Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon as Proclaimed Offender (PO) in the Rs5 billion rupees corruption cases.
In the previous hearing, the court had issued non-bailable arrest warrant for the Minister and directed the authorities to produce the accused in the court by arresting him.
However, NAB prosecutor presented report over Memon’s non-arrest. As per the report, Sharjeel Memon had fled to abroad to avoid arrest due to which he could not be arrested.
The prosecutor pleaded the court to declare Memon as PO in the case. After hearing the argument, the court issued directive to initiate proceeding to declare the accused as PO.
The same court had already declared Anita Baloch, a co-accused in the case, as PO.
As per NAB reference, the former Information Minister and officials of the department including Zulfiqar Shalwani had committed corruption of over Rs5 billion.
The PPP leader is living in Dubai and London for over a year after law-enforcement agencies launched a crackdown against political bigwigs and bureaucrats on various cases related to financial irregularities.
