Fata Reforms Delay: Opposition Continues Protest in NA

Islamabad (December 13, 2017): The opposition parties continued their protest in the National Assembly against the government from dropping FATA Reforms Bills from the agenda of the house.

The opposition lawmakers staged walkout for the third consecutive day today against non-inclusion of the FATA Reforms Bill in the agenda of the Assembly.

Naveed Qamar of PPP says that the government disgraced the Parliament by dropping the bill from its agenda.

The NA session was held here with Speaker Ayaz Sadiq in the chair. At the start only 16 members from treasury benches and 14 from opposition were present in the house. The lone minister present in the house was Minister for Safron Lt. Gen (Retd) Abdul Qadir Baloch.PPP Leader Naveed Qamar while speaking on the floor said that the government disrespected the Parliament by dropping the bill from the agenda.

He announced that joint opposition would stage walkout. Speakers Ayaz Sadiq advised opposition not to walked out of the session, but his plea was not heeded to.

The joint opposition staged walkout from the house. Afterward quorum was pointed out and upon lack of quorum the Speaker adjourned the session till tomorrow.

He announced that opposition would continue staging walkout until the government did not present the bill in the house.

Yesterday, the opposition had staged walkout from the house against not presenting the bill in the house.Opposition Leader Syed Khursheed Shah, while criticising the non-serious attitude of the treasury benches, had said the government was not sincere about the Fata reforms and that was why it was using delaying tactics. He had said the walkout and protest in the House would continue till the concerned minister comes with valid reasons for the delay in moving the Fata Reforms Bill in the House.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Shaikh Aftab Ahmad had told the House the government was serious in legislation for the Fata reforms. He had said that the issue had also been taken up with the PM, who was scheduled to leave for Turkey on Tuesday. He said the prime minister, who would also attend the NA session on Friday, had also called the parliamentary leaders of all the parties at breakfast on the same day.

He said all the issues pertaining to Fata reforms would be resolved during Friday’s meeting between the prime minister and parliamentary leaders. He said matters pertaining to Fata reforms bill and constitutional amendment for delimitation of constituencies will be sorted out through dialogue with the parties.Khursheed Shah, however, was not satisfied with assurance of the minister as he said the prime minister was not serious in resolving the issue. “The premier could have attended the proceedings as he was scheduled to leave for Turkey in the evening but it seems that he is not serious,” he said.

Later during a meeting at the opposition leader’s chamber, a committee of joint opposition was constituted on the issue of Fata reforms. The committee to be headed by Khursheed Shah would include Farhatullah Babar, Ejaz Jakhrani, Sirajul Haq, Sahibzada Tariqullah, Mian Attique, Shaikh Salahuddin and Shah Jee Gul Afridi.

The PTI would forward two names after consultation with the party’s chairman.
