Delimitation: Nawaz Asks Sadiq to Contact other Parties

Islamabad (Nov 07, 2017) Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on Tuesday called on former Prime Minister and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif.

Sources said that Speaker National Assembly briefed Nawaz Sharif over the meeting of leaders of parliamentary parties in the Parliament he presided over today regarding delimitation.

They added that he further briefed him about the stances of different parties. The two leaders reviewed the ongoing deadlock between government and the opposition parties especially PPP and PTI over the delimitation issue.Ayaz Sadiq informed Nawaz Sharif about the stance of PPP and PTI over the issue. Nawaz directed the party leaders to form public opinion regarding the provisional results of population census.

He further directed the PML-N leaders to hold meeting with the leaders of other parties and settle the issue amicably.

Meanwhile, a delegation of National Party led by its chief Hasil Bazenjo and former Chief Minister Balochistan Abdul Malik called on Nawaz Sharif at Punjab House. The NP leaders discussed different issues of mutual interests and overall political situation of the country with Nawaz Sharif.Earlier in the day, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq chaired a meeting of leaders of all parliamentary parties in the National Assembly held at Parliament House to develop consensus on the draft delimitation bill.

The meeting discussed the proposed delimitation bill for delimitation of constituencies in the light of provisional results of the 6th population census.

Leaders and representatives  almost all political parties in the Parliament attended the meeting. No decision regarding passage for the draft legislation could be taken in the meeting. The leaders will meeting again tomorrow at 11:00 am.

Sources said that officials of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and Statistics Division briefed the elected lawmakers.

After the meeting, Speaker National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq said that another meeting of the parlianmetary parties leaders would be held tomorrow.

He said that he briefed the leaders about the issue and urgency of it.  Last week, the parties had agreed on keeping the total number of NA seats the same and changing the quota of the provinces in light with the provisional census results.However, when the time came to pass the appropriate legislation in the NA, the main opposition parties, PPP, PTI and MQM, backed out.

Talking to media before the meeting, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly criticized the government decision to prorogue the National Assembly session.

The ECP has said it needs Parliament to pass necessary legislation in line with the latest census if next year’s elections are to be held on time.
