Justice (R) Dost Muhammad Khan Named Caretaker CM KPK

Islamabad (June 05, 2018): Election Commission has named Justice Retired Dost Muhammad Khan as Caretaker Chief Minister of KPK on Monday.

The matter was earlier forwarded to the electoral body after the parliamentary committee constituted to nominate the caretaker chief minister was unable to finalise a candidate for the post.

A consultative meeting of the electoral body was held earlier today to discuss the names of the caretaker chief minister of the KPK, which were given by the parliamentary committee.

Earlier on June o3, the six members parliamentary committee of the dissolved Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly failed to overcome the deadlock about the nomination of Caretaker Chief Minister and had referred the issue to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

According to the details, the parliamentary committee formed to decide and appoint a caretaker chief minister for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa decided to refer the matter to the Election Commission of Pakistan, confirmed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Shaukat Yousufzai.

“The parliamentary committee meeting ended without a breakthrough. We have decided to send the matter to ECP,” Yousufzai said.Three representatives each from the outgoing and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Fazl) participated in the meeting.

Under the constitution, the Election Commission of Pakistan will nominate Caretaker Chief Minister within two days from among the four names suggested by PTI and JUI (F).

It is worthwhile to mention here that deadlock between the government and opposition prevailed, when PTI Government after consensus on the name of Manzoor Afridi, took his name back.

The Opposition and Government held meetings after taking back the name of Manzoor Afridi, but they could not find consensus on any name.

On May 26, Khyber Paktunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak and Opposition Leader in the provincial assembly Maulana Lutfur Rehman had agreed on the name of the caretaker chief minister of the province.

Manzoor hails from Khyber Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas, who belongs to a family of businesspersons and is a non-political figure. He is the younger brother of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Senator Ayub Afridi and uncle of Peshawar Zalmi owner Javed Afridi.

Shaukat Yousafzai is hopeful that Parliamentary Committee will reach consensus, but it could not happen.

Profile of Caretaker CM KP: 

Dost Muhammad Khan was born on 20 March 1953 in Bannu District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He received his early education from Government High School No. 1, Bannu. He graduated from the Government Post Graduate College, Bannu in 1974 and obtained law degree from Government Sindh Muslim Law College, Karachi in 1976.Justice Retried Dost Muhammad Khan began his career as a lawyer in 1976 and served in lower and high courts as well as the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

He remained President of District Bar Association, Bannu from1986-87 and President of Peshawar High Court Bar Association D.I. Khan Bench from 1999-2000.Khan was appointed as an additional judge on 10 September 2002. He was elevated as permanent Judge of the Peshawar High Court on 10 September 2003 and took oath as Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court on 17 November 2011, where he served for two years and two months, before being elevated to the Supreme Court of Pakistan on 31 January 2014 and got retired in March 2018.

He refused to take oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) 3 November 2007 and rejected all kinds of offers.
