Dushanbe: Pakistan Willing to Improve Relations with Neighbors

Dushanbe (July 5, 2017): Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif met Tajik President Emomali Rahmon. Durring the one-on-one meeting the two leaders agreed to promote bilateral relations between the two countries. A range of other issues were also discussed by the two leaders during the meeting.

Addressing press conference after the meeting Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that the China-Pakistan Economic Project (CPEC) will help enhance contacts in the region. Tajik President Emomali Rahmon said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s visit will help an already good between the two countries further.

Saying that Pakistan and Tajikistan are working on the defense matters together Nawaz Sharif offered the host country to get its armed forces trained in Pakistanarmed forces of Tajikistan

Earlier on his arrival at Dushanbe airport Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was welcomed by his Tajik counterpart Kokhir Rasulzoda.

A formal welcome ceremony held at the palace of President Imamali Rehmon where he was accorded guard of honour also.

The prime minister is accompanied by a high level delegation comprising Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, Minister Trade Khurram Dastgir, and Advisor for Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz. Secretary Water and Power, Chairman NHA, and high officials of Foreign Ministry are also a part of prime minister’s delegation.

Saying that Pakistan organized a Business Forum event in Tajikistan in May this year the prime minister expressed hope that Tajikistan hold a trade exhibition in Pakistan.

He also said that Pakistan offers best and the least expensive trade road not only to Tajikistan but also to  Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan who are bounded together by a Traffic Transit agreement  through its Gwadar Port as well as the road and the railway networks. It is vital that Pakistan be included in the thus tripartite Traffic Transit agreement, the prime minister added.

The prime minister also stressed the need for enhancing the bilateral trade between Pakistan and Tajikistan.Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s visit is a part of the efforts to strengthen regional peace, stability, and cooperation.

The meeting of Pakistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan Tripartite Commission is also scheduled to be held in capital Dushanbe on the sidelines of the visit to hold discussions on regional topics of mutual interest.

A Joint Declaration titled “Road towards strategic partnership for regional solidarity” will also be signed during the visit.

Accompanied by a high level delegation the prime minister will meet Tajik leaders in capital Dushanbe to discuss issues pertaining to bilateral relations, economic cooperation, trade and investment, energy cooperation and regional connectivity.Regional and international issues of mutual interest with particular attention to Pakistan’s policy of a peaceful neighborhood will also be discussed in these meetings.

A meeting of Pak-Tajik Joint Business Council will also be held on the sidelines of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s visit. The Joint Business Council will consider steps to enhance bilateral trade and commercial ties between the two countries.

Tajikistan is also hosting a Quadrilateral Summit of CASA-1000 member states, including Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan and Tajikistan.

This project aims at developing energy corridor and land connectivity between Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan and Pakistan. It will also provide electricity generated in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to Afghanistan and Pakistan.
