ECP Adjourns Hearing of Zia Afridi’s Disqualification Case

Islamabad (November 29, 2017):  Election Commission of Pakistan on Wednesday adjourned hearing of disqualification reference against former Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf minister and MPA Ziaullah Afridi till December 11, 2017.

A four member ECP bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Justice Sardar Raza Khan heard a reference filed by PTI seeking ECP to disqualify its expelled MPA Ziaullah Afridi as member of KP Assembly for crossing floor.

During the hearing, PTI counsel Mustafa Sherpao said that newspapers carried out the news of Afridi joining PPP and PPP website also mentioned Afridi’s joining and in media talks Afridi has been terming himself as member of PPP.

The counsel said that strangely Afridi while responding PTI show-cause notice had declined joining PPP or quitting PTI. He added that Afridi was dismissed from cabinet on charges of corruption.Afridi’s counsel Latif Khosa said that on the reference filed against his client Speaker KP Assembly had ruled that his joining PPP was violation of Article 63 of the constitution.

He added that PTI submitted new and different documents each times. He added that he had many objections on the very reference filed by it.

He added that he would file response after going through all the documents filed by PTI. He sought time for filing reply.

Upon this the ECP adjourned hearing of the case till December 11, 2017.On the previous hearing last month, the ECP had asked Ziaullah Afridi to submit his reply.

In the reference, filed on Sept 27, PTI Chief Imran Khan sought Afridi’s disqualification from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on the grounds that the former minister had confirmed last month that he would be joining the PPP.

The ECP told Afridi that the reference says he has joined the PPP and asked him to file a written response by October 23.

The former minister asked the bench to allow him more time to submit his response as his father is undergoing treatment. In reply, the bench said that a decision on the reference has to be made within 30 days.
