ECP sends PM, Capt Safdar assets detail to Panama leaks JIT

Islamabad: (May 11, 2017) Election Commission of Pakistan has sent the details of assets of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Captain Safdar to Joint Investigation Team (JIT), which has been formed to probe Sharif family off shore companies as per SC orders. It was submitted in a reply to JIT letter. 

According to the details, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday has forwarded details of Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif and Captain Safdar’s assets to Joint Investigation Team (JIT) that was constituted by Supreme Court (SC) to probe into Panamagate case.

The commission has also sent the nomination papers of both to the team to precede the investigation.

After receiving letter from JIT, ECP held emergency meeting and gave approval to provide the record of PM Nawaz Sharif and Captain Safdar. ECP has also informed that JIT that PM Nawaz Shairf was not the member assembly between 2002 to 2013, therefore his financial record between the said period is in not available.

“EC has sent PM assets record between 2013-2016 to JIT,” ECP said.

According to sources ECP has also sent the available details of Captain Safdar’s assets to JIT.

Earlier JIT, headed by Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Additional Director-General Wajid Zia asked National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to provide complete record of the Hudaibya Paper Mills case.

Terms of Reference (ToRs) were also reviewed in the session that was attended by JIT members State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) Amer Aziz, Securities & Exchange Commission of Pakistan’s (SECP) Bilal Rasool, Inter-Services Intelligence’s (ISI) Brigadier Nauman Saeed, Military Intelligence’s (MI) Brigadier Kamran Khursheed and Director of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Irfan Mangi.

Sources told that JIT would seek assistance of experts from FIA and other departments to ensure fair investigation whereas it would also comprehensively review court’s decisions and available documents.

The investigation team will submit a progress report after every two weeks to the apex court whereas it is also supposed to complete probe within two months.

On April 20, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa had announced Panama Leaks case decision comprising of 540 pages, saying that the court issued a split ruling calling for a joint investigation team. Two of the five judges went further, branding Sharif “dishonest” and saying he should be disqualified, but they were outnumbered.

Panama Papers had published a leak of documents belonging to Mossack Fonseca, a law firm in April 2016 creating an uproar in Pakistan among other countries. The leak was studied by International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and stated names of incumbent as well as former leaders of the world who owned shell companies.

Opposition parties in Pakistan saw offshore companies owned by daughter and two sons of PM Nawaz as means to either stash wealth in foreign accounts or purchase assets abroad. The top court took up the case in October last year on petitions filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Awami Muslim League and Jamaat-e-Islami and reserved the verdict in February after conducting hearings on daily basis.
