Electoral Reform Body Prepares New Election Bill 2017

Islamabad (July 27, 2017): Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reforms has prepared a new draft of Election Bill 2017.

Under the newly prepared Bill, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will be given more powers and it will be strengthened.

The ECP for the first time will get powers to scrutinize the assets of members of the parliament.Sources said that the new draft Election Bill 2017 will delegate special powers to ECP.

The Commission will have the powers to cancel the membership of parliamentarian on miss-declaration of assets.On miss-declaration, the member will be imprisoned for three years and one lakh fine will be imposed for miss-declaration of assets.

As per the new law, ECP’s decision can only be challenged in Supreme Court.
