Fata Reforms: Opposition Again Stages Walkout from NA

Islamabad (December 14, 2017): The opposition parties continued their protest in the National Assembly against the government for dropping FATA Reforms Bill from the agenda of the house.

The opposition lawmakers staged walkout for the fourth consecutive day today against non-inclusion of the FATA Reforms Bill in the agenda of the Assembly.

During the session PkMAP chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai said that as per 1935 Act, people of FATA were independent. He claimed that commitment was made with people of FATA that their areas would not be included in Pakistan. Upon this PTI MNA Muhammad Ali Khan rose on his seat and lodge strong protest.  He said that if someone wanted to talk of Kabul it better he should go there.

Ali added that if Achakzi did not recognize FATA as part of Pakistan why he was sitting in the House.

The opposition lawmakers continued their protest and staged walkout from the session, announcing that till inclusion of the Bill in the agenda of house they would  continue their protest. During yesterday session, PPP Leader Naveed Qamar while speaking on the floor had said that the government disrespected the Parliament by dropping the bill from the agenda.

He had announced that joint opposition would stage walkout. Speakers Ayaz Sadiq advised opposition not to walked out of the session, but his plea was not heeded to.The joint opposition staged walkout from the house. Afterward quorum was pointed out and upon lack of quorum the Speaker adjourned the session till tomorrow.

During previous session, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Shaikh Aftab Ahmad had told the House the government was serious in legislation for the Fata reforms. He had said that the issue had also been taken up with the PM, who was scheduled to leave for Turkey on Tuesday.He said the prime minister, who would also attend the NA session on Friday, had also called the parliamentary leaders of all the parties at breakfast on the same day.

He said all the issues pertaining to Fata reforms would be resolved during Friday’s meeting between the prime minister and parliamentary leaders. He said matters pertaining to Fata reforms bill and constitutional amendment for delimitation of constituencies will be sorted out through dialogue with the parties.Khursheed Shah, however, was not satisfied with assurance of the minister as he said the prime minister was not serious in resolving the issue. “The premier could have attended the proceedings as he was scheduled to leave for Turkey in the evening but it seems that he is not serious,” he said.

Later during a meeting at the opposition leader’s chamber, a committee of joint opposition was constituted on the issue of Fata reforms. The committee to be headed by Khursheed Shah would include Farhatullah Babar, Ejaz Jakhrani, Sirajul Haq, Sahibzada Tariqullah, Mian Attique, Shaikh Salahuddin and Shah Jee Gul Afridi.

The PTI would forward two names after consultation with the party’s chairman.
