FM Qureshi, Afghan Counterpart Discuss Bilateral Issues

Kabul (December 15, 2018): Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi held a meeting with his Afghan counterpart Syed Salahuddin Rabbani at Ministry of Foreign Affairs Afghanistan on Saturday.

On the occasion, the Afghan Foreign Minister thanked Shah Mahmood Qureshi for Pakistan’s efforts in Afghan reconciliation.

During the meeting, bilateral and other issues of mutual interest were discussed.

Earlier addressing a joint news conference along with his Chinese and Afghan counterparts after trilateral dialogue in Kabul on Saturday Foreign Minister Shah Mehmoud Qureshi stressed for a joint strategy to eradicate the menace of terrorism from the region.

He noted that only through collective efforts we can wipe out terrorism and achieve the objectives of peace and development.The foreign minister said that we all want peace and stability in Afghanistan. He said Pakistan will benefit the most from the peace and stability of the neighbouring country.

He said that Pakistan will extend cooperation to bring all the afghan groups to the table of negotiations. He, however, said it is up to the Afghans themselves as to how they want to achieve the goal of peace.

Shah Mehmoud Qureshi said that Pakistan condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. He said he is visiting Kabul to bridge the trust deficit.

In his remarks, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said both Afghanistan and Pakistan are friends of China and his country will extend every possible cooperation to build trust and confidence between the two countries.

He said his country will also assist in establishing connectivity projects including a rail line between Peshawar-Kabul and Kandahar.

The Chinese foreign minister said the afghan reconciliation process can be taken forward by bringing the Taliban to the table of negotiations.

Afghan Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani said  that Pakistan has an important role for peace in Afghanistan. He said peace in his country is vital for peace and security of the entire region.

He said that eradication of terrorism will pave the way for economic development and job creation.Pakistan, China and Pakistan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding

Earlier, Pakistan, China and Pakistan signed a Memorandum of Understanding vis-a-vis anti-terrorism cooperation trilateral dialogue has concluded in Kabul on Saturday.

The document was signed by Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Afghan counterpart Salahuddin Rabbani.

The signing was witnessed by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

Earlier, Pakistan-China-Afghanistan trilateral dialogue held to discuss mutual cooperation and peace efforts.In his inaugural speech, Afghan Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani said collective efforts are required to address the common challenge of terrorism.

He said that Pak-Afghan relations are rooted in common faith and culture.

He said that we desire to strengthen our relations with Pakistan.

The Afghan foreign minister also appreciated the Chinese one belt one road initiative.

Speaking at the trilateral dialogue in Kabul on Saturday, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that Pakistan, China and Afghanistan will have to collectively foil the designs of enemies of peace in the region.

He stressed for bolstering regional cooperation in diverse sectors.Reaffirming commitment to eradication of terrorism, the Foreign Minister was of the view that better border management between Pakistan and Afghanistan and intelligence sharing will be greatly beneficial for both the countries.

He said that Pakistan will continue to play facilitative role on Afghan reconciliation process.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that we will do everything to support the growing momentum towards reconciliation provided others play their due role and share responsibility and create an enabling environment towards that end.

He said that Pakistan has always supported dialogue process for peaceful resolution of Afghan conflict.

He said that our stance has now also been vindicated by the international community.The Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in his remarks said that his country desires to make the Afghan reconciliation process successful.

He said that we will play our role to reduce trust deficit between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Wang Yi said that his country also wants to further strengthen relations with Afghanistan and desires to make it part of CPEC.

He said that we support an Afghan led and afghan owned peace process.

The second round of Pakistan-Afghanistan-China trilateral dialogue is being held in Kabul today to discuss peace as well as economic and counter-terrorism cooperation.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, who led the Pakistani delegation at the dialogue, was accompanied by Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua and other senior officials of the Foreign Office.

During his day-long visit, the foreign minister will hold bilateral dialogue with his Chinese counterpart.

Speaking to the media ahead of his departure, the foreign minister welcomed the Chinese initiative of holding trilateral dialogue. “Both Pakistan and China desire peace, stability, prosperity and development in Afghanistan,” he said.“We are carrying the message of friendship and peace to Afghanistan,” he added. The foreign minister stressed that peace is imperative to for the region to move forward on the path of sustainable development.
