FM Qureshi Calls on Chinese Counterpart in Beijing

Beijing (December 25, 2018): Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi met with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing today, on the third leg of his four-nation visit as part of the government’s policy of outreach in the neighbourhood.

The news was confirmed by Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr. Mohammad Faisal in a tweet earlier in the day today.

The foreign ministers discussed bilateral relations between the two countries and the promotion of regional connectivity and other important issues during the meeting.

Qureshi arrived in Beijing earlier today following visits to Afghanistan and Iran on Monday.

Earlier yesterday (December 24), Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi visited Iran on the second leg of his four-nation visit, held talks with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif in Tehran.

They discussed the bilateral relations and the regional situation. Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua and other members of the delegation were also present in the meeting.The Foreign Minister said that Pakistan desires to further promote its political and economic ties with Iran. He said that improving relations with all neighbours is the cornerstone of Pakistan’s foreign policy.

The Iranian Foreign Minister reciprocated Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s views saying that Iran is also committed to improve its relations and bilateral cooperation with Pakistan.On the same day, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi met Afghan President Asharaf Ghani in Kabul.

Talking to Afghan President Ashraf Ghani during a one-on-one meeting in Kabul on bilateral and regional issues, Qureshi said that peace and stability in Afghanistan will benefit Pakistan as well as the whole region.

Both sides discussed ways to improve bilateral relations and resolve important issues of regional and mutual interest. Shah Mehmood Qureshi expressed good wishes for holding of Afghan parliamentary elections.

Afghan President thanked Prime Minister Imran Khan and Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi for playing a crucial role in the Afghan peace process.

During the four-nation visit, he will discuss Pakistan’s bilateral relations with senior leadership of these countries to strengthen cooperation in various areas.

The Foreign Minister will also exchange views with leaders of these countries on the fast-changing regional and international environment.Recent developments concerning peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan would also be discussed during these meetings.

The visit is part of promoting various initiatives and ideas for regional cooperation especially in promoting economic and people-to-people linkages.

Implementing the vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan, Pakistan is eager to strengthen ties with neighbours and regional partners.Pakistan has always maintained that solution to the conflict in Afghanistan lies in an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process.

International community’s recent consensus to adopt this as the guiding principle to resolve the 40-years old Afghan conflict vindicates Pakistan’s long-held view.
