Footage Leak: Interior Ministry Rejects PTI Allegations

Islamabad (June 5, 2017): Interior Ministry on Monday rejected the allegations that it was involved in leaking of Hussain Nawaz’s footage as baseless, absurd and laughable, saying that Islamabad police was only responsible for security outside the Federal Judicial Academy, where the JIT’s proceeding is held.

A spokesperson of the Ministry said that blaming the interior ministry for leaking of a photograph of the prime minister’s son, Hussain Nawaz, apparently showing him waiting to or appearing before the Panama Papers joint investigation team (JIT), on social media by a spokesman of a political party was absurd, baseless and laughable.

He clarified that Islamabad police was responsible for security only outside of the FJA.  “The Ministry has nothing to do with the administrative affairs of the Academy,” the statement added.

“No department of the Interior Ministry including Islamabad police has access to JIT offices and filming of the investigation process, “ the spokesman added.

The spokesman regretted that it was inappropriate that people were playing politics on a such sensitive issue.

As Islamabad police also provide security to Imran Khan, so as per the same logic, whether Interior Ministry will be responsible for everything that happens within Bani Gala, the spokesman questioned.

It is to be mentioned here Hussain Nawaz photograph, which appears to be a screen grab from a CCTV feed of his appearance before the JIT , went viral on social media after someone leaked it.

It shows the PM’s son sitting ia plain room on the premises of the Federal Judicial Academy, ostensibly facing his questioners.

The government while strongly reacting to the leak has demanded of the judiciary to hold inquiry into the leak. It has termed the move as an attempt to malign and disgrace Sharif family. However, PTI has  accused the government of leaking the footage purposefully to play victim card.
