Foreign Funding Case: SC seeks PTI reply over ‘Ghost Donors’ 

Islamabad (May 31, 2017): The Supreme Court sought a reply from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to the allegations of receiving funds from unknown donors and details of last five bank transactions within one week. 

According to the details, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s ineligibility case was Wednesday heard in Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan on Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi’s petition in which Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar demanded Imran Khan to prove Jemima’s five money transactions.

PML-N’s Hanif Abbasi, through his counsel Akram Sheikh, moved a miscellaneous application in the apex court on Monday, wherein he highlighted that 124 ghost donors — 80 corporations, 23 people believed to be Indians, and 21 other foreigners – had donated to the PTI-LLC California.

Giving his arguments before three-member SC bench led by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar,  Iman Khan counsel Naeem Buhkari said “Imran Khan is not a shareholder or director of the Niazi Services, therefore he did not mentioned the company in his assets.”

“And when Imran declared his London flats under amnesty scheme the time to show off assets had been completed,”  he told court adding that it was leniency but not dishonesty over not to declare Niazi Services in nomination papers.

He further told that provision of Niazi Services other related documents was the onus of Hanif Abbasi.

On which Chief Justice asked the Naeem Buhkari that he must present the evidence over money trail he had submitted in SC.

Supreme Court asked thirteen question from ECP regarding time of political parties scrutiny, who and when will issue details of assets, on what authority can take action against foreign funding, election commission when and how take action over complain of foreign funding, is ECP has the right to take suo moto notice to assess foreign funding of a party and some other critical questions.

Justice Saqib Nisar said Imran Khan has to justify that the money was sent by Jemima, as the decision of this case cannot be taken until the record from her comes. PTI chief’s counsel Naeem Bukhari said Jemima has ensured that she will soon provide the documents.

CJP remarked that Imran Khan did not declare his London flat before amnesty scheme, upon which Naeem Bukhari responded that Imran was a common man when he took benefit of tax amnesty scheme.

Bukhari said it was a mistake to not reveal Niazi Services Limited, not dishonesty. Justice Faisal Arab said to Naeem Bukhari that you are negating your statement yourself.

PML-N lawyer Akram Sheikh involved in a dialogue with CJP and said Naeem Bukhari is still on the fourth point and plans to go abroad as well, therefore, this case would not reach its conclusion soon.

Naeem Bukhari replied to Akram Sheikh and asked him to show patience. He pointed out that Akram Sheikh will himself to go to Saudi Arabia in the last Ashra of Ramazan.

Three-member bench has asked the details of five transaction from Imran’s counsel and later, hearing adjourned till Thursday, Tomorrow.
