Gigi Comes With Apology On Black Face Backlash

Web Desk(May 05, 2018)American model Gigi Hadid has come up with an apology for appearing on Vogue’s cover in a ‘faked bronze’ complexion that ran into a backlash pertaining that the attempt sabotaged opportunities for models of the colour.

The 23-year-old model that had appeared alongside male model Justin Martin took to Twitter on Thursday to apologize and removed the picture of Vogue’s cover from her Instagram account which was captioned:

“Excited, honoured, and grateful to cover @VogueItalia’s May Issue. Thank you so much for an amazing shoot, I am forever inspired by you all !!! & can’t wait to share the full story !!”

Vogue’s cover met with controversies concerning cultural appropriation, while some critics cited it as ‘worst cover in years’. Vogue was criticized for making the Gigi ‘look black’ and her expression was bad. “Just hire a model of colour to do the job,” the complainant added.

“There are so many talented and beautiful models out there who could actually make a better cover,” another commented on Vogue’s site.

Responding to these criticisms, Gigi came forward with an apologetic stance on the outburst and posted a picture from the shoot of which she defended the critics’ concerns regarding the bronzing and wrote:

“Please understand that my control of a shoot 1. is non-existent in terms of creative direction 2. ends completely when I leave to set, and anything done to a photo in the post is out of my control fully,” she said.

“The bronzing and photoshop is a style that S. Klein has done for many years and I believe was what was expected from the shoot (to show me in a different way creatively), BUT, although I understand what Vogue Italia’s intentions were, it was not executed correctly, and the concerns that have been brought up are valid.”

She mentioned that the photo shoot would have been dealt differently if she had a say in the execution of the shoot, adding that she never intended to sabotage opportunities for anyone.

“I want to apologize because my intention is never to diminish those concerns or take opportunities away from anyone else, and I hope this can be an example to other magazines and teams in the future,” she said.

“There are real issues regarding representation in fashion ― it’s our responsibility to acknowledge those issues and communicate with them to work towards a more diverse industry.”

Another apology came in a statement from photographer Steven Klein in response to blackface criticism commented on his page.

“Throughout its history, Vogue Italia has respected and encouraged the creative viewpoints of commissioned photographers. In our latest cover shoot by Steven Klein, the vision was to create a beachwear-themed story with a stylized bronzing effect,” the statement, shared by Teen Vogue, said. “We understand that the result has caused some debate with our readers, and we sincerely apologize if we have caused any offence.”

This wasn’t the first time Vogue had stepped forth with such a selection of models, as an earlier edition of bringing Gigi to don a similar dusky complexion with blue afro hair had brought the fashion firm across a debaters’ tirade.
