Govt Approaches SC Against SHC Move In Favour of Sugar Mill Owners

ISLAMABAD:The federal government has approached Supreme Court (SC) to challenge order of Sindh High Court (SHC) which prevents government from taking action against sugar mill owners in light of recommendations of sugar inquiry commission.

The attorney general for Pakistan (AGP) has filed the appeal in the apex court, requesting it to set aside the restraining order the high court gave on a petition moved by sugar mills owners.

The federal government has stated in the appeal that the SHC had no jurisdiction to halt an investigation into a matter, adding the high court gave relief to the petitioners without affording it a fair hearing. Even Islamabad High Court has declared earlier no rights of sugar mills owners affected by the commission report.

Earlier, SHC stopped the federal government from taking actions against the sugar mills owners who – according to an inquiry commission report – had allegedly minted billions of rupees by whipping up a sugar crisis in January this year.
