Faizabad Sit-in: Govt, Protesters Reach on Agreement: Sources

Islamabad (November 22, 2017): After a long 17 days wait and chaos in the capital, eventually Government and protestors have reached on an important agreement, however they have not revealed the details of it yet. 

Sources told Abb Takk News that the meeting between Government and Sit in Leadership was held for two hours in capital last night, in which both the parties meticulously discussed the demands and government side offers in detail.

Sources further told that dialogue committee head Pir of Golra Sharif Hussain Shah has played vital role to bring protestors to the dialogue table in order to end the 17 days long issue. According to the sources, the agreement will be issued any time after signatures of all the relevant parties.

Activists of religious groups continue to stage sit-in at Faizabad on 17th day as protesters belong to a religious group continued their sit-in for the 17th consecutive day on Wednesday, blocking Faizabad Interchange despite a notice by the Supreme Court.

The protest has resulted in severe issues for residents of the capital and Rawalpindi, who face traffic jams and mobility issues on a daily basis. At least two casualties due to ambulances being unable to cross the protesters have also been reported.

The Supreme Court took notice of the Islamabad sit-in on Tuesday and sought replies from the relevant government quarters. Hearing a separate case, the notice was taken by a divisional bench headed by Justice Mushir Alam, when government officials and counsels informed the bench of hurdles being faced by them due to the ongoing sit-in by religious parties in Islamabad.

In his remarks, Justice Qazi Faez Isa asked which Shariah permits obstruction of people’s routes and use of foul language.

On Monday, Islamabad High Court issued contempt of court notice to secretary interior, chief commissioner and Inspector General, Islamabad police, with regard to compliance of its order to call off the sit-in.

Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui issued the notice while hearing identical petitions in connection with sit-in of religious parties at Faizabad interchange

Federal Minister for interior, Ahsan Iqbal appeared before the court and apprised that being a sensitive matter government showing patience towards the protestors as it did not want any mishandling in this regards.

The Federal Minister expressed hope that government would be successful in dialogues with protestors and that purpose sought 48 hours from the court to comply with its orders.The court while accepting plea of the Minister adjourned further hearing of the case till November 23, however issued notices to the respondents seeking their reply that why not a contempt of court proceedings should be initiated against them. Unfortunately the government could not remove the sit-in in the stipulated period.

The protesting bodies have vowed to continue the sit-in protest until law minister Zahid Hamid tenders his resignation for a ‘clerical mistake’ in amendment that was brought to Elections Act 2017.In the then revised form-A of nomination papers, the words “I solemnly swear” were replaced with “I believe” and the clause relating to Khatm-i-Naboowat was made applicable to non-Muslim candidates.

However, the change was branded a clerical mistake by National Assembly speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and the government had vowed immediate rectification of the alleged mistake.

The Senate had approved reversal of the changes made earlier.
