Govt Seeks Opposition’s Cooperation Over Reforms Agenda

ISLAMABAD: The government has sought cooperation from the opposition on the reforms agenda. Minister for Narcotics Control Azam Swati says government is committed to its reforms agenda.

Addressing a news conference along with Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood in Islamabad today, he said legislation for reforms agenda requires majority in Upper and Lower Houses of the parliament.

He said the legal bills proposed by the government stay pending for months in the Senate. Azam Swati said we want to use show of hands method for Senate elections to remove the chances of horse trading and to bring transparency in the process.

Azam Swati said consensus will be developed in cooperation with other parties on the issue.

Speaking on the occasion, Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood said election amendments are being brought in Senate elections to remove horse trading.

He said 39 recommendations have been submitted to cabinet to make the process of election and results transparent. He said one of them suggests delimitation of constituencies should be completed four months before the conduct of elections.

Shafqat Mahmood said strict punishments have been recommended for those making the election process dubious.
