Hearing Underway On Nawaz’s Plea For Suspension Of Sentence

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) held hearing underway over plea submitted by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif seeking bail on medical grounds.

Prior to the hearing, the IHC approved the petitioner to take back his previous petition challenging verdict in Al-Azizia reference on merit while the second petition was seeking his bail on medical grounds.

A divisional bench comprising Justice Amir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Kiyani is hearing the plea. Nawaz’s counsel Khawaja Haris pleaded the court to approve taking back previous petition.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) opposed to plea, arguing that Nawaz’s medical record was also present at the time of filing first petition but he was not facing any health risks.

The high court accepted the Nawaz’s plea for taking back its first petition. The IHC judge remarked that the court will hear the second petition seeking suspension of sentence on medical ground in light of verdicts given by the Supreme Court (SC) as three recent SC verdicts were present regarding NAB cases.

Earlier in the day, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) submitted its reply to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) over pleas submitted by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif seeking suspension of sentence in Al-Azizia reference.

The anti-corruption watchdog in its reply pleaded the court to reject the pleas after declaring the sentence as non-bailable.

The reply stated that Nawaz Sharif will not be given bail on medical grounds as best medical facilities were being provided to the incarcerated premier in the country.
