Huge Fire Near Southend Airport as Hanger Goes on Fire

London (August 16, 2017): A HUGE blaze has broken out near Southend Airport after a hangar caught fire – with a witness reporting an “explosion”.

Essex firefighters were called to the hangar, which is used to livery planes, near the terminal shortly after 10.40 am today and believe the fire was caused “accidentally”.

A huge fire broke out an airport hangar close to Southend Airport in Essex this morning. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the black smoke from miles away as firefighters battled to douse the flames. Pictures quickly emerged on social media showing thick plumes of black smoke billowing above the airport. It’s thought there wasn’t any aircraft inside the building at the time of the fire, and the airport is still operating as normal.

Early reports from an eyewitness suggested they had heard an “explosion”, while others denied hearing a bang. An Essex Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “When firefighters arrived at the scene they reported the large hangar, which is used to livery aeroplanes, was on fire.

“Six fire engines were requested to help tackle the fire.

“Firefighters are using a aerial ladder platform to pour water on the large building from above.

“The officer in charge at the incident reports crews are making good progress.”

The latest update from the fire service, at 12.40pm, reported that the flames were almost extinguished. The spokesman added: “A full investigation will be carried out to find the cause of the fire, however at this stage we believe the fire started accidentally.”

Staff say flights are continuing to operate and the airport remains open. A Southend Airport spokeswoman said: “Essex Fire and Rescue is currently dealing with an incident at the Air Livery hanger on the north side of the airfield.
