Huge Fire Rips Through Apartment Building in New York

New York (November 18, 2017): A massive fire has broken out at an apartment building in Hamilton Heights, New York today. 

Above 160 firefighters are battling the blaze that sent large plumes of dark smoke across the city from where it started in Hamilton Heights.

The fire started just after 3pm local time inside a six-storey building at 565 W. 144th St. near Broadway.

The building is both residential and retail. The fire is on the top floor of the building. Witnesses say sections of the building’s facade are falling to the street below.

Police urge people to stay away from the area and local residents must close their windows. So far no injuries have currently been reported, and it is unclear how many people were inside when the blaze began.

It has been identified as a four-alarm fire in a rating system that only extends up to five.
