Islamabad (November 14, 2017): Islamabad High Court (IHC) on  Tuesday suspended Election Reforms Act 20017 on a petition of Aalmi Tahafuze Khatme Nabuat.

A single member bench of the IHC headed by Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui heard a petition filed by Aalmi Tahafuze Khatme Nabuat chief Maulana Allah Wasaya seeking to declare the Election Act 2017 as null and void.

A deputy attorney general submitted before the court that the Election Reforms Act was passed for holding next general elections. He said that the as per the law in question the next elections would be held in the country.The law officer pleaded the court not to suspend the operation of the law without hearing the federation.

After hearing arguments from the petitioner counsel and the law officer of the federal government, the court suspend the operation of the Election Reforms Act 2017.The petitioner counsel Tariq Asad  said that the IHC has suspended the law and sought replies from the federal government and other respondents in 14 days.

In his arguments, the deputy attorney general said that elections were around the corner and a decision to suspend the law will lead to chaos.  Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui, who was hearing the case, said it is a sensitive matter but it cannot be left without adjudication.
