IHC to Hear Plea Seeking Nawaz’s Bail on Medical Grounds Today

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) will hear the petition seeking former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s bail on medical grounds in Al-Azizia reference on Friday (today).

A two-member special bench of the IHC, comprises of Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, will conduct the hearing on the plea.

NAB’s chairman, NAB Lahore DG, Kot Lakhpat Jail’s superintendent and MS of the Services Hospital were made parties in the petition.

Yesterday, while removing objections, Justice Farooq asked from the petitioner’s advocate: “What would happen if Nawaz Sharif says that he had not filed any petition? […] we are removing objections but make sure to have Sharif’s signature.” “We will decide about the matter from the judicial side.”

The court had also issued notices to the concerned parties, including the chief secretary, secretary of interior and medical reports from Services Hospital’s team and medical superintendent of Kot Lakhpat Jail, in the petition.

On Thursday, Opposition Leader in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif filed a plea in the IHC seeking bail of Nawaz Sharif on medical grounds.

In a petition, Shehbaz requested the court to release former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on bail till the ruling on appeal.

“Nawaz Sharif must be allowed to undergo treatment within Pakistan or abroad as per his will,” said the petition.

In December 2018, the accountability court handed Nawaz Sharif seven years in jail in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption reference.
