IHC Hearing Sharifs’ Pleas Against Avenfield Verdict

Islamabad (July 31, 2018): Islamabad High Court on Tuesday hearing the appeals of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Capt (R) Safdar, filed against their conviction in Avenfield reference.

A division bench of IHC comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb is hearing the appeals.

The court will also hear pleas for transfer of another two National Accountability Bureau (NAB) references against Sharifs to another court. Earlier on July 16, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (r) Safdar had submitted appeals in Islamabad High Court (IHC) against Avenfield reference verdict.

The petitioners have requested the court to annul the decision pertaining to their imprisonment, fine, disqualification and forfeiture of property.

All the three accused should be released on bail until the final verdict, it added.

It is to be mentioned here that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Captain Safdar were convicted and sentenced to prison in absentia for ten years, seven years and one year respectively, in Avenfield verdict that is likely to further disrupt an already chaotic campaign for national elections this month.

Maryam Nawaz and Captain (r) Safdar, who were candidates for the forthcoming general elections were also disqualified from contesting elections for 10 years each.

The sentence and a fine of 8 million pounds, or $10.6 million, came almost a year after Supreme Court removed Sharif from office and less than five months after the court barred him from holding office for life.Nawaz Gets 10 Years in Jail, Maryam 7 In Avenfield ReferenceNawaz Sharif was convicted under section 9(a)(5) of the NAB ordinance.

The case stemmed from the Panama Papers leak that disclosed expensive and undeclared property owned by the Sharif family in London.

Nawaz Sharif Sends Audio Message From Jail:

Earlier on Sunday, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) Quaid Nawaz Sharif said that he has been put in jail to keep him away from them.

Nawaz Sharif in an audio message released from Jail said that “My daughter, who’s a daughter of the nation, has also been locked into jail,” he said adding that the opponents did not know that the prison and imprisonment could not sever his relationship with his people.

“Neither any dictator could break off that relationship in the past nor those pulling the strings would be able to do so today,” asserted Nawaz Sharif.

He requested the people to pray for the recovery of his critically ill wife, whom he left behind, in a London hospital, to return to his country.

He said the entire country had been turned into a jail. He said now was the time to stand up and break all shackles. He said the time had reached that people would have to free themselves from the (illegal) restrictions and to do away with the games being played with them for the last 70 years.He said such games with masses have turned the Quaid-e-Azam’s Pakistan into a laughing stock. “That’s why I have raised the slogan of ‘Vote Ko Izzat Do’ (Give Respect to Vote. Now it’s your turn to carry this flag (movement) forward.
