NA-60 Poll Delay: CJP To Hear Sheikh Rasheed’s Plea

Islamabad:(July 24, 2018): The Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar will hear the petition filed by Awami Muslim League (AML) leader Sheikh Rashid against the verdict of Lahore High Court that rejected his plea and upheld Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) notification to postpone polls for NA-60 (Rawalpindi-IV).

Chief Justice will conduct hearing over Rashid’s petition in Supreme Court Lahore registry.

Following the rejection of plea from LHC Rawalpindi bench, the AML chief filed petition against the verdict in Supreme Court.

Earlier, Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rasheed approached the Supreme Court to hear his plea challenging the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to postpone the election in Rawalpindi’s NA-60 constituency.

Earlier, the Lahore High Court while rejecting Sheikh Rashid petition against postponement of polling on NA-60, Rawalpindi, upheld Election Commission (EC) decision.According to details, the judge Lahore High Court Rawalpindi bench Justice Mujahid Mustaqeem heard the Sheikh Rashid plea filed against the postponement of the election on NA-60, Rawalpindi.

Earlier on Sunday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) postponed polls in NA-60, Rawalpindi constituency following Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi’s sentence.

“The polling schedule for NA-60 will be issued later,” the ECP said. A special anti-narcotics court sentenced Abbasi to life in the ephedrine quota case late Saturday, just four days before the general election in the country.

Earlier on Saturday, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi gets life term in Ephedrine case. The Control of Narcotics Substances (CNS) court on Saturday, while announcing its verdict in the ephedrine quota case, handed life imprisonment to PML-N leader Hanif Abbasi.

Abbasi was taken into custody from the courtroom after the judge announced the verdict. The supporters of PML-N leader did try to hinder Abbasi’s arrest and offered some resistance.

The PML-N leader will not be able to contest the upcoming general elections following the narcotics court’s decision.Abbasi, who is contesting the upcoming election from NA-60 Rawalpindi, faced charges of misusing 500kg of the controlled chemical ephedrine, which he obtained for his company, Gray Pharmaceutical, in 2010.

The court, in its verdict announced after 6 years, ruled that nearly 363 kilograms of ephedrine was rightly used. It said that Abbasi failed to provide evidence of the use of the remaining quantity of the drug.
