Illegal hiring in IHC: Asma asks other judges to resign too

ISLAMABAD: Senior lawyer and former President Supreme Court Bar Association Asma Jahangir on Monday hailed Supreme Court judge Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman for his resignation, saying that the step taken by Hameed-ur-Rehman will help restore people confidence in the judiciary.

Talking to media Ms Jahangir said that other judges responsible for illegal hiring in Islamabad High Court should also resign.  She said that when illegal appointments were made even in judiciary then who will approach judiciary for justice.

She said that media should be allowed to cover the hearing of references against judges of superior judiciary by Supreme Judicial Council. However, he advised media to only cover those references wherein serious allegations have been leveled against the judges. She said that many references had also been filed against judges on frivolous charges, adding that such baseless reference should not make media’s headlines.

Asma Jahangir advised Bar Councils’ to activate their disciplinary committees and take action on complaints against lawyers. Those layers who slapped judges or beat parajudicial staff must have no room in the Bar, she urged.
