India Lok Sabha Elections To Be Held From April 11 In Seven Phases

NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha elections 2019, the biggest democratic ‘festival’ to be observed anywhere in the world this year will take place in India’s 543 constituencies across 29 states and 7 Union Territories (UTs) from April 11 to May 19, in seven phases.

More than 350 political parties of various sizes and ideologies will try to win the trust of the people and vie to win seats in the Lok Sabha.

Many political parties have announced their alliances to take on one another. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has joined hands with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Khazgam (AIADMK).

The Indian National Congress is going with Dravida Munnetra Khazagham. Many other small parties have joined forces with NDA and the Congress.

In other regions of the nation, the Samajwadi party has forged an alliance with arch-rival Bahujan Samaj Party to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party.

In Bihar, many regional powerhouses like Janata Dal (United), Lok Janshakti Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Lok Samta Party, and others have pulled their socks to make an impact in the 40-seat state.

While northern India will be totally focused on the Lok Sabha elections, four states – Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim – will elect their Vidhan Sabha members as well. Assembly polls will take place in 414 state constituencies. Regional parties like the Telugu Desam Party, Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party, Biju Janata Dal, Sikkim Democratic Front and others will have a lot at stake in their respective states.

This time around, the Election Commission of India has a big task at hand, as the 2019 elections are expected to be the biggest in the history of democratic India. The first phase of polling on April 11 will see 91 Lok Sabha constituencies across 20 states and UTs voting to choose their respective representatives in the Lower house of Parliament.

In the second, on April 18, polling will take place on 97 seats across 13 states and UTs. In the third phase, the biggest, 116 constituencies across 14 states and UTs will go to the polls on April 23.

The fourth and fifth phases will see voting in 71 seats in eight states and 50 seats in 7 states, on April 29 and May 5, respectively. Similarly, in the two final phases, on May 12 and 19, 59 seats of 7 seats and UTs and 59 states in 8 states and UTs will go to the polls, respectively.
