Irked by ministers’ absence Chairman Senate Raza Rabbani offers to resign

ISLAMABAD:  Irked by the continuous absence of ministers from the session of the Upper House of the Parliament, Chairman Senate Raza Rabbazi on Friday offered to resign.

Rabbani prorogued the session of the house in protest against the absence of the ministers for indefinite period under Rule 23-(A).

Rabbani said that if the government had any issue with him, he was ready to resign. He added that it seemed the government was not ready to accept the constitutional position of Senate.

The Senate chairman said that due to continuous absence of the ministers and attitude of bureaucracy the prestige of the house was compromised. He added that since the start of the current session, no minister attend it.

He added that he tried his best to run the house as per constitution, but now it seemed difficult for him to continue. He added that the situation was serious and the gap between the centre and federating units was widening.

Rabbani prorogued the session of the house in protest against the absence of ministers for indefinite period under Rule 23 Para-A.  It was for the first time in Senate’s history that the session was prorogued under Ruler 23 Para-A.

Leader of the House in Senate Raja Zafarul Haq tried to placate Rabbani but failed.  MQM Senator Tahir Mashhadi said that it seemed the issue was beyond the control of Leader of the House and ministers.  He added that after president, the office of Chairman Senate was most import.

Earlier, opposition members staged walkout against non-reply to members’ questions by the ministers.  There was no minister present in the house to respond to MQM Senator Mian Atiq’s call attention notice regarding over-billing by K-Electric.
