AC Begins Hearing, Dar, Counsel Fail to Appear

Islamabad (November 2, 2017): The Accountability Court hearing a corruption case against Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has resumed its proceedings.

Neither Dar nor his lawyer are present in court as Judge Mohammad Bashir chairs the proceedings at the Accountability Court-I inside the Federal Judicial Complex. Dar’s guarantor Ahmad Ali Quddusi was present in the court.

When the court inquired Dar’s whereabouts, Dar’s lawyers submitted a medical report saying that their client is undergoing medical treatment in London and he is unable to walk for more than four minutes. The medical report submitted to the court says that Dar has to undergo another medical test tomorrow and Dar has also to undergo angiography in London on November 3.

The NAB lawyers opposing granting exemption to Dar from appearance said that Dar should had the medical report to Foreign Office through Pakistan High Commission London.

Meanwhile, NAB submitted details of Dar’s bank accounts and assets to the court. NAB prosecutor also told the court that Ishaq Dar owns properties overseas but the documents of them are not available.

In case Dar does not appear in court today, sources said his surety bond will be confiscated and non-bailable warrants would likely be issued for his production in court.

At the last hearing on October 30, the minister, accused by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) of possessing assets that are disproportionate to his known sources of income, was a no-show.

The court had then issued bailable warrants for his arrest and sent a notice to the minister’s guarantor who has submitted the surety bond on his behalf.

The court, according to media reports, had also summoned the minister’s sons to appear today.The court is also expected to take up today NAB’s plea to freeze Dar’s assets. The bureau froze the assets after its chairman ordered to do so on October 18 but it needs the court’s endorsement as according to NAB laws, the order is only valid for 15 days.

NAB is seeking the freezing of Dar’s six bank, properties and vehicles in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates as well as investments in both countries.
