Dhaka: JI Bangladesh senior leader executed

The senior leader of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh Mir Qasim has been hanged in crime of love with Pakistan and opposed Bangladesh in 1971 while JI Pakistan condemned the execution saying it is the punishment of supporting Pakistan.

Foreign news agency reported that JI  leader Faqir Mir Qasim was hanged 40 kilometer from capital Dhaka in Qashimpur jail at 10:32 pm local time followed by his last meet with his family members.

Mir Qasim sentenced to death by so-called infamous military tribunals set up by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2010 has sparked violence and drawn criticism from opposition politicians, including leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami, that it is victimising Hasina’s political opponents. Thousands of extra police and border guards were deployed in the capital Dhaka and other major cities to tighten security.

International human rights groups say the tribunal’s procedures fall short of international standards – an accusation the government denies.
