JIT Holds Swati Responsible For Farm House Incident

Islamabad (November 19, 2018): A joint investigation team (JIT) formed by the Supreme Court to probe Federal Minister Azam Swati’s misconduct and assets held him and his guards responsible for the row over farmhouse land which eventually resulted in the transfer of Islamabad IGP Jan Muhammad.

The JIT, headed by DG National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Rawalpindi Irfan Mangi, submitted its report to the apex court.

The report, which comprises five volumes, holds Swati and his guards responsible for the incident.

The report also raises questions over the transfer of IGP Jan Muhammad.Earlier on November 02, the Supreme Court heard a Suo motu case on the transfer of Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jan Muhammad and formed a joint investigation team (JIT) to probe Federal Minister Azam Swati’s misconduct.

Supreme Court of Pakistan rejected the apology letter of Minister Azam Swati in the IGP Islamabad Transfer Case and demanded his resignation.

CJP Mian Saqib Nisar ordered Federal Minister for Science and Technology Azam Khan Swati to resign from his position.

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Azam Swati, the affected family, the attorney general and Islamabad IGP appeared before the bench.

During the hearing, the chief justice ordered the formation of a JIT to inquire “whether Swati as a minister was involved in misconduct or not” regarding the Islamabad IGP’s transfer.

“The JIT will also probe into Swati’s assets,” the bench stated. “It will also inquire whether Swati can travel to the United States or not,” the bench further said.

Further, the bench remarked, “The JIT will investigate the cases against Swati in the US and find out whether he can travel to the country or not.”

The chief justice added, “These are decisive moments and will determine whether the rich and powerful can exploit others. If an inquiry is conducted on merit then it will strengthen people’s faith and confidence in Pakistan’s institutions. This will be a service to the country and the generations to come.”

“Poor people are pressured and the affected family has forgiven Swati but we have not forgiven him,” he added.

The IGP was abruptly transferred on October 27 after he allegedly refused to take action on a complaint by Swati’s son regarding a fight over purported encroachment with a family at their farmhouse.

The transfer made headlines on the media and prompted the Supreme Court to take suo motu notice of it. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar subsequently formed the JIT to probe allegations of misuse of authority, misconduct and encroachment against the minister.
