Karachi Coastal Areas Flooded as Cyclone Kyarr Intensifies

KARACHI: Pakistan Meteorological Department on Monday issued an alert saying Super Cyclonic Storm over East-central Arabian Sea has moved further west-northwestward during the last 12 hours and now lay centered at about 745 km southwest of Karachi.

The Kyarr cyclone is getting strong, several areas in Malir have been submerged into the seawater.

The Super Storm now lay centered at 0800 PST of 28th October 2019 near Latitude 18.3°N and Longitude 65.2°E with maximum sustained surface winds of 230-240 kmph and is currently gusting at 265 kmph.

The PMD Chief Sardar Sarfraz said: “The strong winds and high tide have pushed the water in the low-lying areas of Karachi, causing sea intrusion.”

He added that they are also expecting the light to moderate rain in Karachi from Wednesday till Friday, as a westerly wave is interacting with the cyclonic conditions in the Arabian Sea.

Earlier, the Sindh government imposed a ban on swimming/bathing at the beaches/seaside within the territorial limits of the Karachi Division for a period of eight days due to the cyclone.

In an official notification issued by the Interior Ministry of Sindh, people in Karachi would be barred from swimming/bathing and fishing activities till November 5.

The provincial government has issued directives to Commissioner Karachi in this regard.

The coastal belt of Karachi was affected by the waves generated by Tropical Cyclone Kyarr in the Arabian Sea, which is expected to further intensify to category 5 with an estimated wind speed of 255km/hr to 265km/hr.
