Man Accused of Robbing Amal Umer’s Family Detained

Karachi (September 25, 2018): The accused, who robbed 10-year-old Amal Umer’s family and fled from the scene on the day she was shot dead, was arrested on Tuesday.

Karachi police chief Dr Amir Ahmed Sheikh said that the accused, Khalid, was arrested during an encounter carried out by personnel of Artillery Maidan Police Station.

“Weapons, mobile phones and a rickshaw were seized from his possession,” the police chief added.

The Karachi police chief further said that Khalid, a resident of Hijrat Colony and a rickshaw driver, admitted to involvement in seven theft incidents.

“Khalid’s accomplice, Shahzad, was killed during a police encounter on August 13,” Sheikh said.

Earlier today, the Supreme Court while hearing Amal’s case constituted a committee that will determine amendments necessary for police training, regulations and treatment of injured persons in hospitals.

A three-member bench headed by the CJP heard the suo moto notice case of the 10-year-old girl, Amal death during police encounter in Karachi.

During the hearing of the case, CJP expressed dissatisfaction over inquiry into the killing of Amal in police encounter.

Such incident happened in Sindh, soon after IG Kaleem Imam took charge as IGP, remarked CJP.

Speaking to the media soon after the decision was announced, Amal’s father thanked the Supreme Court and Chief Justice of Pakistan for taking notice of the case.

“Our daughter will not come back to life but we want the problems [that led to her death] to be eradicated.”, he said.

“We want laws to be passed to solve the issues, be them at the police’s end or the hospital.

“We shouldn’t address things when a tragedy occurs, even though we have already faced this strategy,” Amal’s father said.

Earlier on September 18, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar took notice of 10-year-old Amal’s death, who was hit by a stray bullet during a police encounter in Karachi’s Akhtar Colony area.

The bullet that hit Amal was from an AK-47 and was fired by a policeman attempting to kill a bandit, who had robbed the 10-year-old’s family a few minutes earlier as they waited at a traffic light to attend a concert on the eve of Independence Day.

After Amal’s parents raised the issue and it came into media highlight, the CJP took suo moto notice, and fixed the matter for hearing on September 25.Notices were sent to Advocate General, Secretary Health, and Inspector General of Police in this regard.

A notice was also sent to Administrator National Medical Centre Karachi, where Amal was initially taken for medical treatment.

On September 22, President Dr Arif Alvi visited the house of Amal Umer, a minor who lost her life after being hit by a stray bullet during a police encounter in Karachi’s Akhtar Colony.

Alvi extended condolences to Amal’s parents and asked them details of the incident that occurred on August 13.

According to sources, the president directed authorities concerned to complete investigation into the incident.
