ISLAMABAD: The sudden drop in export orders has put the leather industry in hot water as it caused the slash in animal hides rates significantly.
Former chairman Pakistan Tanneries Association Gulzar Feroze said increasing dollar prices, jump in charges of gas, electricity and labour has increased the cost of leather related products. He said in one year 10 tanneries have been closed.
“Due to heavy rains, most of the hides become in bad shape while rains also caused the wastage of sea salt, used to preserve hides.
He warned the government should take immediate steps for the second-largest exports industry as it is heading towards collapse.
