LHC Accepts Nawaz Election as PML-N Chief Petition for Hearing

Lahore (November 16, 2017): Lahore High Court (LHC) while accepting a petition challenging election of Nawaz Sharif as president of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for regular hearing.

An LHC bench headed by Chief Justice Mansoor Ali Shah heard the petition of former Secretary Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Aftab Bajwa challenging the amendment to Political Parties Orders paving the way for election of Nawaz Sharif as PML-N chief.

The petitioner counsel Azhar Siddique pointed out that SC had disqualified Nawaz Sharif as member of National Assembly after that he became disqualified to continue as head of PML-N.

He added that after the SC judgment the PML-N government amended the Political Parties Order allowing a disqualified person to hold party office. He raised the point that instead of public interests legislation for benefiting a certain person or group can’t be made.He contended that the legislation was against the spirit of the constitution. The counsel pleaded the court to struck down the amendments to the Political Parties Order .

The court after hearing preliminary arguments of the petitioner’s counsel accepted the petition for regular hearing. The court issued notices to Federal government and Law Ministry and adjourned hearing till December 4, 2017.
