LHC Reserves Verdict on Petition Seeking Nawaz on ECL

Lahore (August 31, 2017): A Lahore High Court (LHC) bench on has reserved its verdict on a petition seeking court directive to put the name of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Exit Control List (ECL) and freeze his assets.

A single bench of LCH headed by Justice Mamoon-ur-Rasheed heard the petition filed by Barrister Javed Iqbal Jaffery, seeking court directives to freeze Nawaz’s assets til finalization of the inquiry being carried out National Accountability Court (NAB).

Iqbal in his petition has also urged the court to put the name of former PM on the Exit Control List (ECL) .The petition argued Nawaz might try to flee the country due to the investigation against him by NAB.

The former prime minister was disqualified by the Supreme Court in its verdict and had ordered to file references against him, after which NAB summoned him and his sons and daughter. The Sharifs, however, failed to appear before the bureau; therefore there is a possibility Nawaz would try to go abroad and will never come back, he argued. The judge after hearing arguments of petitioners and counsels of Interior Ministry and federal government law officer reserved its verdict.
