Life and Political Struggles of Benazir Bhutto in Pictures

Web Desk (December 27, 2018): 11th dead anniversary of former Prime Minister of Pakistan and martyred Chairperson of Pakistan People’s Party, Benazir Bhutto is being observed today.

Benazir Bhutto has been elected as Prime Minister of Pakistan twice and is known as the first Prime Minister of the Muslim World.

Benazir Bhutto, who was the eldest daughter of Begum Nusrat Bhutto, was born on June 21, 1953.

Benazir’s father Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto is the founder of Pakistan People’s Party and has also been elected as Prime Minister and President of the country. He was hanged to death in 1979.

Benazir Bhutto took her education from Harvard and Oxford University.

In 1984 Benazir, along with her family, left for London where she resided until 1988. After her return, Benazir successfully led the People’s Party through the 1988 election.

After winning support from a coalition government in the national assembly, Benazir assumed the Prime Minister’s Office in December 1988.Benazir Bhutto had married Asif Ali Zardari, son of Hakim Ali Zardari, a businessman and landowner on Feb 17, 1987.Benazir’s government was dismissed on August 7, 1990, by the then President. Bhutto successfully led her party to victory in the 1993 parliamentary elections and once again became the prime minister. Once again her government was dismissed by the then president on 5 November 1996.In 1998, Benazir went into self-exile to her estate in Emirates Hills in Dubai.She had three children Bilawal Bhutto Zardari (1988) Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari (1990) and Asifa Bhutto Zardari.

Image result for Benazir with her three childrenOn 19 October 2007, Benazir returned to Karachi, where her campaign bus came under attack leaving dozens of her supporters dead, while she remained safe.Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a gun-and-bomb attack outside Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh on December 27, 2007.

Pakistan’s politics remains incomplete without her and charter of democracy is seen as an important milestone of her political career.She was laid to rest by the side of the graves of her father and brothers in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, Larkana.
