Live: PAT Protest At Mall Road Ends With National Anthem

Lahore (January 17, 2018): The Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) and other opposition parties on Wednesday kicked off their movement to “force the PML-N out of power — both in the federal and provincial governments” with a protest staged on Lahore’s Mall Road.

Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) have joined hands to stage a protest against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government on Mall Road in Lahore today (Wednesday) over the 2014 Model Town massacre.

9.23pm: PAT Chief Tahir Ul Qadri Addressing Rally

Tahirul Qadri once again arrived at the stage to address the protesters. He called Sheikh Rasheed the “Man of the Match” of today after he announced his resignation from the National Assembly. He said the Mall Road agitation is staged not only by PAT but also shared among united opposition parties including PTI and PPP.

Qadri said that the leaders of opposition parties will hold a meeting within two days in which they will decide the future strategy. He asked his supporters whether they will protest outside the Jati Umra residence of the Sharif family, at which they chanted “yes”.

8.47 pm: Sharif Family A Mafia who Either Threatens Enemies or Buys Them: Imran

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan is addressing a rally held by Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) and opposition parties on Mall Road in Lahore.

The PTI chief was addressing the second session of the rally and was accompanied by the top leadership of his party.

He called the Sharif family a mafia who either threatens the enemies or buys them out. He slammed Nawaz Sharif for calling out judiciary.

The first session was attended by leaders from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and addressed by former President Asif Ali Zardari and National Assembly Opposition Leader Khursheed Shah.

8.35 pm: I resign From My National Assembly Seat: Shaikh Rasheed Ahmed

Sheikh Rasheed, Awami Muslim League (AML) chief addresses rally participants. Rasheed said that anti-Pakistan remarks of United States (US) president Donald Trump and Indian army chief are time sensitive.

Sheikh Rasheed announced his resignation from the National Assembly seat. The lawmaker in lower house said, “I resign from my National Assembly (Rawalpindi) seat.”

Zardari left the stage and went inside his vehicle. He will soon exit the Mall Road rally. It is likely that Imran Khan will arrive at the protest after the departure of Zardari.

6. 45 pm: We Want To End Rule of Sharifia Empire Not the Constitution: Qadri

Pakistan Awami Tehreek Chief (PAT) Dr Tahirul Qadri has said that their campaign was to provide justice for all victims. He said that we want to end rule of Sharifia Empire not the constitution.

Criticizing the Sharif brothers, Tahirul Qadri stressed that they had turned the Punjab Police into the militant wing of the PML-N.

Addressing the allied opposition rally, Qadri thanked leaders and workers from all political parties for attending the show of strength in Lahore. He said that they all had gathered to get justice for the victims of Model Town tragedy.

“If we wanted to disturb peace you [Sharif brothers] would not have been able to leave Jati Umrah,” Qadri said.

PAT chief Dr Tahirul Qadri said that they do not want to take a step against Pakistan’s constitution and democracy, and only want an end of the “sultanate of Sharifs.”

“Entire political leadership is here to honour humanity, to empower the weak, to give voice to the voiceless,” the PAT chief said.“We have gathered here to save the country from Sheikh Mujeeb of a new era.”

He lamented that the rights of the people were being usurped and the national treasury plundered in the country.

Qadri maintained that they do not want to sabotage peace in the country. “We only want to put an end to your cruelty. If we had to take the law into our own hands, then we would not have tolerated tragedies.”He maintained that their protest is aimed at getting justice for the oppressed.

“The purpose of this gathering is to get rid of the enemy. We want to end the sultanate of Sharifs,” he said.

6.30 pm, Only Danger To Country is From Jati Umra: Zardari

PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday said that the only danger to the country is from Jati Umra — the residence of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

“They do not care about Pakistan, they only care about Jati Umra,” Zardari said while addressing a joint opposition protest rally to seek justice for the Model Town tragedy in Lahore.

He claimed that only the PPP cares about Pakistan, its soil, and the people of its soil.

“They [Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz leaders] know that they can be disqualified anytime I wish to do so, but I just think for [the betterment] of Pakistan,” said Zardari.

The PPP co-chairman also thanked the attendees for showing solidarity with the Model Town incident victims and promised to get justice for the families of the deceased.

“My brothers and sisters, I thank you for coming to this protest here. We will get justice for Model Town victims, and Zainab,” he said, referring to the seven-year-old child brutally raped and murdered in Kasur.

He stressed, during the address, that Pakistan has a long journey ahead.

“Humans do not have a journey, nations do. We eat the crops grown on this soil, so our allegiance is with this country.”The former president also lashed out at military dictators taking over the country and denounced martial law administrator Zia-ul-Haq’s decisions of the past.

“Dictators do not build countries, they only destroy them. The problems that we have today are gifts from Zia-ul-Haq.”

The opposition leader in National Assembly Khursheed Shah addressing to the protesters at Mall Road said that such a big gathering has clarified that the political parties have the same objective and politics as it also the voice of the nation.

“Entire nation is stand with the victims of the Modal Town and demanded the equal  justice for poor and rich ,” he said adding that PPP wanted to strengthen democracy in the country.He claimed that the sit-in aim was to save state and Pakistan and they will make Pakistan strong.

6.00 Asif Ali Zardari Arrives

The co-chairman Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Asif Ali Zardari has arrived here in protest venue at Mall Road where the rally has been started with the speeches of different party leaders.

The PPP’s central leadership including opposition leader in NA Khursheed Shah, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Aitrzaz Ahsan, Latif Khusa, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Nyar Bukhari and Manzoor Watto are present in the rally before the arrival of the party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari.PTI’s leaders Firdos Ashiq Awan, and other are also present on the stage. The workers of PAT, PTI, PPP and other parties are also attending the rally with large numbers.

Addressing to gathering PML-Q leader Pervez Elahi termed the day historic and said that all the political leaders gathered for seeking justice for Modal Town victims and will not return without getting justice.

5.15 pm, PAT Chairman Tahir ul Qadri Reaches Rally

PAT chief Tahirul Qadri has reached the rally venue from his Model Town residence. On the stage accompanying him are senior leaders of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), including Khursheed Shah, Aitzaz Ahsan, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Nayyar Hussain Bukhari and Manzoor Wattoo among others.

A joint opposition protest rally led by Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) against the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government — to seek justice for victims of the Model Town tragedy — is under way in Lahore. Supporters of opposition parties, including PPP and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), are at the rally at Charing Cross, Mall Road.

Earlier, Lahore High Court gave conditional permission to PAT and other allied parties to hold protest in Lahore. They have been asked to wrap up the protest by 12.am tonight. The court has also barred media not to cover the event after the set time.

The government has also been ordered to clear the protest site at 12am and open the roads for traffic.

On the other hand, the PAT and other parties have already started their protest on Mall road.Members of opposition parties, including Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), are at the rally at Charing Cross, Mall Road.

A stage has been established atop a container in front of the Punjab Assembly. PPP chief Asif Zardari and PTI Chairman Imran Khan are expected to address the rally at different sessions, owing to their mutual hostility.Sources said Zardari will address the rally before evening prayers whereas Imran will take the stage after.

Moreover, PAT chief Tahirul Qadri is expected to announce the joint opposition’s future strategy — which can range from a sit-in to a long march or a mix of both — in the night during his concluding speech, according to sources.Over 6,000 police personnel, including 11 SPs and 24 DSPs, have been deployed.

The arteries around the Mall Road remain congested in the wake of the demonstration. The flow of traffic remains affected on Shahrah-e-Fatima Jinnah, Kachehri Road, Hall Road, Cooper Road, Boharwala Chowk and Egerton Road.

Similarly, nearby educational institutes, including the Punjab University, as well as surrounding markets and the Lahore Zoo are closed today.Earlier, a three-member Lahore High Court (LHC) bench reserved its decision on a petition against today’s Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT)-led protest.

Traders of Mall Road and Advocate AK Dogar have challenged the protest in the LHC.

A larger bench headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan and comprising Justices Shahid Jamil Khan and Shahid Karim waas hearing the case.

Punjab Advocate General (AG) Shakeelur Rehman and counsels of the respondents were also present in the court.

Earlier, the Punjab government presented its report on the protest in court.The AG said the protest administration has been informed of the security threats and problems related to the demonstration.

When asked by the court if the protest is a one-off demonstration or a continued sit-in, Dogar responded that from Qadri’s speeches it seems the protest will be a prolonged sit-in.

During the hearing of the case on Tuesday, the petitioners argued that Mall Road is an economic hub and the protest will hinder livelihoods of people. The petitioners stated that Nasir Bagh should be considered as an alternative venue for the protest.

After the arguments, the LHC sought replies from the federal government, PEMRA and other parties.Meanwhile, the LHC dismissed the plea requesting an initial order to stop the protest.

Earlier on Tuesday,the district administration of Lahore rejected Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) and other opposition parties’ request to stage a sit-in on Mall Road, a day before the power show against the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

The administration had stated that people protesting should not choose Mall Road, as Section 144 is in place in the area which forbids more than four people to gather at one place.

Meanwhile PAT Action Committee regarding model town incident was held second meeting in Mihaj ul Quran on Tuesday and showed determinnation to hold protest against PML N Government. The meeting was attended by PPP, PTI, JI and others.

Earlier, the LHC chief justice had formed a three-member bench, to be headed by Justice Farrukh Irfan Khan and comprising Justices Shahid Karim and Aminuddin Khan.

However, later, Justice Irfan recused himself from the case for personal reasons.
