PTI’s Dr. Arif Alvi Elected 13th President of Pakistan

Islamabad (September 04, 2018): Dr Arif Alvi of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has been elected 13th President of Pakistan, according to unofficial and unconfirmed results.

The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) with the support of its allied parties has fielded Karachi-based Dr Arif Alvi, whereas Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians’ presidential candidate is Aitzaz Ahsan. JUI-Fazl’s Maulana Fazlur Rehman is in the poll arena on the behalf of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and some other opposition groups.

A total of 424 votes were cast in the National Assembly and Senate. Arif Alvi received 212 votes, Maulana Fazlur Rehman 131 votes and 81 votes for Aitzaz Ahsan.

Arif Ali has received 320 electoral votes, Fazlur Rehman 159 and Aitzaz Ahsan 120 votes. Results from the Punjab Assembly are awaited. Six votes polled in Parliament were rejected.

VOTE COUNT

National and Senate: 

PTI candidate Arif Alvi secured 212 votes, joint opposition candidate Maulana Fazalur Rehman 131 and PPP’s Aitzaz Ahsan 81 votes.

Dr Arif Alvi: 212 votes (NA and Senate) 45 (Balochistan Assembly), 41 (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly), 22 (Sindh Assembly).

Fazlur Rehman: 131 (NA and Senate) 15 (Balochistan Assembly), 13 (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly).

Aitzaz Ahsan: 81 votes (NA and Senate) 39 (Sindh Assembly).

Punjab Assembly

In Punjab 351 out of 354 parliamentarians cast their vote.

Chief Justice of Lahore High Court Justice Yawar Ali presided over the polling process while election commissioner Punjab, Zafar Iqbal Hussain, performed duties as returning officer.

PTI’s Abdul Aleem Khan was the first to cast his vote in the Punjab Assembly.

Sindh Assembly

158 members of the Sindh Assembly cast their vote in the presidential election with five lawmakers abstaining. According to reports Aitzaz Ahsan received 100 votes and Arif Alvi 56 votes. Two votes were dismissed in the election.

According to the electoral system, Aitzaz received 39 votes and Alvi 22 votes.

Sindh High Court Chief Justice Ahmed Ali Shaikh performed the duty of presiding officer.

KP Assembly

In the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, 111 out of 112 lawmakers cast their vote in the election.

Arif Alvi received 78 votes, Fazlur Rehman 26 votes and Aitzaz Ahsan received 2 votes. Two votes of lawmakers were dismissed.

According to the electoral formula, Arif Alvi votes tally to 41 votes and 13 votes for Fazlur Rehman

Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth supervised the polling process in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.

Balochistan Assembly

Arif Alvi received 45 votes and Fazlur Rehman received 15 votes in the provincial assembly. One lawmaker did not cast his vote in the election.

Balochistan High Court Chief Justice Syeda Tahira Safdar acted as presiding officer.

Voting Ended.

Voting for presidential election has ended and counting is underway in National Assembly, Senate and all four provincial Assemblies after the polling for the election of 13th president of Pakistan was concluded at all the legislatures at 04:00 pm.

Because of the divide that the opposition parties and PPP have so far failed to bridge, Dr Arif Alvi will most likely be elected as the president.

Apart from PTI’s Alvi, the PPP’s Aitzaz Ahsan and Jamiat-e-Ulema (F) chief Maulana Fazalur Rehman are also in the race. The joint Opposition was to field a single candidate, however, no consensus was reached on a joint Opposition nominee.

Earlier, PPP presidential candidate Aitzaz Ahsan and PTI’s Arif Alvi arrived at the Parliament House to cast their votes.

Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court presided over the election in the Parliament and lawmakers have started casting their votes through secret ballot.

Ahsan and Fazl cannot cast votes for themselves as the PPP leader is not a member of the Senate, while the JUI-F chief is neither a MNA nor an MPA. Alvi is the only presidential candidate who can cast vote for himself.

Punjab Assembly

PTI’s Abdul Aleem Khan was the first to cast his vote in the Punjab Assembly.

A total of 354 MPAs of Punjab Assembly can cast their votes, for whom two polling booths have been setup.

Sindh Assembly

In Sindh, 163 members of the provincial assembly out of 168 will cast their vote for presidential election.

Sindh High Court Chief Justice Ahmed Ali Shaikh is performing the duty of presiding officer.

KP Assembly

Polling for the presidential election in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has also ended.

A total of 112 MPAs have cast their votes in the presidential election.

PTI has 79 members in the KP assembly, while the joint opposition has 27, PPP five and PML-Q has one.

Balochistan High Court Chief Justice Syeda Tahira Safdar presided presidential poll as presiding officer.

It is a must for lawmakers to bring their assembly cards, in order to cast their vote. Further, mobile phones are not allowed in the assemblies.

Pakistan’s President is elected indirectly through an electoral college, comprising the Senate, National Assembly and the four provincial assemblies – Balochistan, Sindh, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Every member of the National Assembly has one vote while the four provincial assemblies are assigned an equal weight with the smallest, the Balochistan Assembly, serving as the base.

The newly-elected president of Pakistan will take oath on September 9.

12.25 pm: Former President and Co Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Asif Ali Zardari cast his vote in National Assembly.

11:40 am: CM Balochistan, Jam Kamal Khan cast his vote in presidential elections.

11:30 am: Presidential polls are underway in Sindh Assembly. Over 70 votes have cast till now. Voters including CM Sindh Murad Ali Shah cast their votes.

On the other hand, IG Sindh Amjad Javed visited Sindh Assembly to check on to security measures.

11:10 am: Like other provincial assemblies of the country, Presidential polls are underway in Balochistan Assembly as well. 7 votes have been cast till now. Abdul Wahid Siddiqui of MMA cast first vote in Balochistan Assembly, second vote was also cast by MMA, Advocate Malik Sikander. While, third vote was cast by Younus Aziz Zehri, again from MMA.

Other than them, Nasrullah Zeray and BNP Awami’s Mastoora Bibi have also cast their votes.

10:50 am: Polls for Presidential election are underway in Peshawar Assembly. Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court, Justice Waqar Ahmed Seth is serving as the presiding officer. 20 votes have been casted till now. First vote was casted by Nighat Orakzai of PPP, while, Akram Khan Durrani of JUI was the second to cast vote.

10:30 am: Presidential polls are underway in Punjab Assembly, leader of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, Abdul Aleem Khan casts first vote.

10:15 am: Presidential poll has began in Sindh Assembly, According to Secretary Election Commission Sindh, one polling booth has set up in Assembly hall, in which two ballot boxes are placed.

10:10 am: Senator Sassui Palijo is the polling agent of Pakistan Peoples Party’s presidential candidate, Aitzaz Ahsan.

10:00 am: Presidential poll for electing 13th President of Pakistan has begun, which will continue till 4 pm today. Election commission has set up polling stations at Parliament House and four provincial assemblies for Presidential elections. The chief justices of high courts will serve as the presiding officers during the poll, while the chief election commissioner will serve as the returning officer.The name of Pakistan Peoples Party candidate Aitzaz Ahsan is on the top of the ballot paper, while Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf candidate Arif Alvi is on the second position and Jamiat-e-Ulema (F) chief Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman’s name is printed on the third place, sources further added.

The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is confident that its candidate Dr Arif Alvi will win the presidential election comfortably.However, all opposition parties, excluding the Pakistan Peoples Party, have nominated Maulana Fazl as their consensus candidate for the election of president. The PPP has fielded Senator Aitzaz Ahsan as its candidate.

Briefing media persons in Islamabad on Monday, Additional Director General ECP Nadeem Qasim said Chief Election Commissioner will submit the results to the federal government on Wednesday.He said that according to the law, the federal government will announce the final results.

A joint session of the parliament will be held in which members of National Assembly and Senate will exercise their right to vote. Voting will be held through a secret ballot. Similarly, provincial assemblies will hold separate sessions for the election.The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has already dispatched ballot papers and other related equipment to the polling stations.

Chief Election Commissioner Sardar Raza is the returning officer for the presidential election, whereas chief justices of respective high courts will serve as presiding officers during the polls at National and provincial assemblies.
