Five Killed, Seven Injured In Mass Shooting In Brazil

São Paulo (December 12, 2018): A gunman opened fire in a Catholic cathedral near Brazil’s most populous city, São Paulo, killing five people and wounding seven others.

According to foreign sources, the attack happened towards the end of a midday service in the Metropolitan Cathedral in Campinas city.

The gunman, carrying a revolver and a pistol, rose from his seat and started shooting randomly just before he killed himself in front of the altar before police could arrest him.

The motive for the attack is not yet clear. Neither the gunman nor his victims have been identified.

At least 20 shots were reportedly fired by the gunman, who has not yet been identified by the authorities.

However, an image of a man slumped over a pew near the altar with a gun in his hand has been confirmed as the suspect by police.Police officers outside the cathedral immediately entered after hearing the shots. Paramedics could be seen treating people at the scene. Ambulances rushed the wounded to hospital.

While gun violence is rampant in Brazil, mass shootings are rare. Many Brazilians are calling for looser gun laws to protect themselves against an epidemic of violence that led to more than 60,000 homicides last year, a record.
