Mayor Karachi Waseem Akhter released after four months in jail

Elected Karachi mayor in recent local bodies election Waseem Akhter has been released on bail from Karachi central jail after four month of stay behind the bar.

Waseem Akhter elected on Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) ticket was granted bail in 39 cases and now he is free to pay off their responsibilities of the slot. Soon after his release he visited Quad-e-Azam mausoleum.

On his release, the leaders of MQM-Pakistan Farooq Sattar, Khawaja Izhar, Faisal Sabazwari along with other leadership and hundreds of its workers have warmly welcomed him.

An anti-terrorism court in Karachi granted bail to Waseem Akhtar and PPP’s Abdul Qadir Patel in a case pertaining to the facilitation and provision of medical treatment to alleged terrorists and gangsters at PPP leader Dr Asim Hussain’s hospital.

Akhtar has been behind bars since July 19, 2016 when an ATC dismissed his pre-arrest bail application in the same case.

Around 30 of the 39 cases pending against him are related to listening and facilitating of the speeches of MQM’s founder Altaf Hussain. Some eight cases are in connection with violence in Karachi on May 12, 2007.
