Mayor Karachi’s Absence: ATC Adjourns Hearing Of May 12 Tragedy Case

KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Saturday adjourned hearing of May 12 tragedy case till February 02 followed by absence of Mayor Karachi Waseem Akhtar.

The court held hearing of four cases related to May 12 – 2007’s mayhem when around 50 people were killed and over 100 wounded in attacks on different rallies of different political parties and lawyers who had attempted to welcome the-then deposed chief justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport ahead of a lawyers’ event.

However, Saturday’s hearing was adjourned due to absence of Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) leader and Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar who was among 22 others indicted in the high-profile case.

Other accused were produced before the court during the hearing.

Waseem’s counsel told ATC that the Karachi Mayor was unable to attend hearing following illness. The counsel also submitted his client’s medical report.

The ATC judge asked the politician’s counsel to assure presence of Waseem Akhtar in next hearing.

Criticising the adjournment, MQM-P leader Rauf Siddiqui expressed outrage over slow progress of proceedings. He said that they will get acquitted if the court hear the proceeding properly ‘only for two hours’

It is noteworthy to mention here that Mayor Karachi Waseem Akhtar and 21 others were indicted by an anti-terrorism court in Karachi on December 8 in two cases related to May 12 tragedy.
