Medical Board recommends treatment of tortured cadet college student abroad

KARACHI:  The medical board constituted by the Sindh health department to assess the health of a class VIII student of the Cadet College, Larkana, who was tortured allegedly by college staff, has recommended sending the paralyzed student abroad for treatment.

The board which examined the the boy on Friday, confirmed that the student was subjected to torture.

The 10-member board headed by Dr Javed reviewed the medical reports of Ahemd and examined him at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.  Dr Umer Farooq, a leading ENT surgeon of the Civil Hospital Karachi, was included in the Board on the insistence of the boy’s father, as Dr Farooq has been his physician.

In the presence of Dr Farooq, the Board examined the medical reports of the student and confirmed that he had been subjected to torture.

A senior official in the Sindh health ministry said the full board met on Friday at JPMC and examined 13-year-old student Mohammed Ahmed Hussain.

Besides determining the cause of injuries as torture, the board recommended treatment of Ahmed abroad, as his treatment in Pakistan was not possible.

The board also met with the student and asked some questions to which he responded through writing on chits.

After detailed examination, the boy was shifted to the ICU  of JPMC where he would be kept under observation for some time.

Earlier, Deputy Director JPMC Dr Seemi Jamali met the father and relatives of the boy and expressed his sorrow over the incident.
