Mehtab Abbasi, Gullali Cleared To Contest Elections

Islamabad (June 26, 2018): Election Tribunal Islamabad has accepted appeals of Sardar Mehtab Ahmad Khan, Ayesha Gullalai against the rejection of their nomination papers by the Returning Officer of NA-53 Islamabad.

The tribunal has allowed both the candidates to contest elections from this constituency.NA 53: Nominations of Former PM Abbasi, Gullali RejectedIt is worthwhile to mention here that on June 19, the Election Commission of Pakistan had rejected the nomination papers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leaders Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Sardar Mehtab Abbasi, along with Ayesha Gulalai for the NA-53 constituency of Islamabad.

The nominations of the politicians were rejected over violation of Section N of the affidavit, which relates to the contribution of a candidate in his or her own constituency.According to the returning officer, the candidates failed to fill the affidavit as per the requirements.

The candidates vowed to challenge the decision in the election tribunal.

Earlier today, the Islamabad Election Tribunal allowed former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to contest the upcoming polls from the NA-53 Islamabad-II constituency.

Justice Moshin Akhtar Kayani, who was hearing the appeal, overruled the returning officer’s verdict.

On the other hand, An election tribunal rejected an appeal against the candidature of Former Foreign Minister and PML-N’s Khawaja Asif from NA-73 Sialkot-II constituency.Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Firdous Ashiq Awan was also given the green signal to contest election from NA-72 Sialkot-I constituency.

Tomorrow is the last day for decisions by Appellate Tribunals on appeals filed against acceptance or rejection of nomination papers for the National and provincial assemblies’ seats.

The revised list of candidates will be published on Thursday.Candidates can withdraw their nomination papers by Friday and the Election Commission will allot election symbols to candidates on Saturday.

Polling for the general elections will be held on 25th of next month.
