PM took COAS into confidance about Jindal meeting report baseless:Maryam

Islamabad (May 12, 2017): State Minister for Information Maryum Aurangzaib on Friday rejected the media reports that the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had taken Army Chief General Qamar Bajwa into confidence regarding his recent meeting with Indian steel magnate Sajjan Jindal as false and baseless.

It is to be mentioned here that BBC Urdu had reported that the Prime Minister had informed senior military officials that a recent meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Indian steel magnate Sajjan Jindal — a close friend of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi — was part of back channel diplomacy between the governments of Pakistan and India.

Quoting unnamed official sources, the BBC Urdu had said that during a recent meeting the prime minister took Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa into confidence about his meeting with Mr Jindal.

I a statement issued here, the minister said that the news about Prime Minister taking the Army Chief into confidence over Jindal’s visit was false and baseless. She added that during the meeting no such discussion regarding Jindal visit was held.

She reiterated the government stance that Jindal was Prime Minister’s personal friend and he med the PM in that capacity.

It is to be mentioned here that last month Mr Jindal met the Prime Minister at his private residence in Murree away from the media glare. Jindal visited the country with his family members and some friends. The meeting fuelled wild speculations after the media broke the news, prompting Maryam Nawaz to tweet that “Mr Jindal is an old friend of the prime minister. Nothing ‘secret’ about the meeting and [it] should not be blown out of proportion”.

The Foreign Office spokesman had claimed his office was unaware about any such meeting.
