New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took his oath of office on Thursday along with his ministers, including for the first time the powerful chief of his ruling that just won a landslide victory in a general election.
Surrounded by more than 5,000 guests and security staffers, Narendra Modi, 68, took the stage dressed in his trademark white kurta-pyjama and read the oath of office in Hindi.
Amit Shah, president of Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), will join the new government as a minister, the party’s leader in the western state of Gujarat, Jitu Vaghani, said on Twitter.
Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Bhutanese Prime Minister Lotay Tshering attended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony.
Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid was also in attendance as Narendra Modi and his council of ministers took oath.
